Revolting Police: How will the MET respond to the cuts?

UK Police protest at pay cuts, London 2008

Police Comment: Dec 13th 2010

“…These idiots (the protesters) have all the answers, all too ready to mouth off to any passing journo or camera crew, filling our screens with pity-me martyrdom. Actually, life is totally unfair from cradle to grave… the revolting yoof do not have a constant worry about starvation, civil war, sky high infant mortality or rampant disease. Most people alive today do. So, students, if you want to go to college, get a job so you can pay your bills – just like the rest of us. If not, take out a loan and live with debt – just like the rest of us.”

Police Comment. March 3rd 2011 – after  Home Secretary Theresa May announces cuts in Police spending

“We are in for a fight, this is a fight that we can win. Honesty, Integrity and Fairness is key. Miss May and Nick Herbert watch out for the shit storm that is coming your way”

The coalition government’s agenda is  to implement their neo-con ideology as rapidly as possible; to make desperate but irreversible changes to our social infrastructure while they are still in power. Theresa May’s (UK Home secretary) latest round of public sector cuts is aimed at, your-friends-and-mine, the police. Already stretched and suffering low morale these cuts will inevitably further impact on the effectiveness of the force – an interesting scenario for the anti-cuts/anti-government movement and one that seems to deliberately catalyse opinion – reminiscent of Thatchers class-centric tactics during the 1980s. Discussions from current police forums (that wouldn’t look out of place on ‘Class War‘) debate internal tactics at combating the cuts including work-to-rule, mass-sick days, strikes and demonstrations – even suggesting jumping sides and joining the anti-cuts march on the 26th:

“There is no doubt this government has some hidden agenda al lstems from the fact most are millionaires and as such are not affected by every day life. I believe that agenda is to line the pockets of Cameron’s rich, greedy pals by privatising as much of the Public Sector as possible. The only way to get change is to do the job we are paid to do, do it by the book and do no more than we are paid to do the one thing for certain this job only works because we make it work, so on monday when the stupid email arrive with the latest stupid idea embrace it let the rest of the job stop see how long before the penny drops .

“…I think I can see another mass demonstration of Police Officers descending on London. March 26th.  seems like a fine day when all other trade unions will be demonstrating too. If we have to make drastic cuts I suggest we cut close protection of the houses of Parliament, Downing Street and The Queen first. This is a definite waste of money. See how long the Government then takes to sit up and take notice. Maybe that will knock the cockiness out of posh boy Cameron. Bring on another election before this country dies.Theresa May didn’t play fair so why should we anymore. ”

“I have never seen some much anger as I have at this time worse than our pay cut issue. If we are not not going to be properly paid, then we cannot be expected to undertake work when not on duty which should include the right to refuse to any calls when off duty… the fed should issue a statement of no confidence in May, seek a review of her right to veto the result of arbitration.”

I’ve got less than 6 years to go in this job, and can see my plans for retirement and paying off my mortgage going up the fecking spout…..”

“All leave on the 26th March is cancelled in the Met.  A/L already booked is honoured but all the rest are available…I hope you all wrap up warm between now and then so that none of you are off sick…”

“Today, Theresa May showed the contempt she has for us. She displayed the utter arrogance that this government has for us. I know I’m bound to be unhappy after what she said but this isn’t just a knee-jerk reaction. I’m genuinely at the end of my tether and feel like I’ve got little to lose now.”

We all need to stick together, with the games just over a year away we could really cause them some issues just by working to the rules we have. Im guessing sickness will rise in any case and you can only work a dog so hard before it bites back. Mess with my pension and salary to much and Ill leave a very big bite HMG along with thousands of colleagues.if our fate is sealed and the fed continue to be un supportive or have any fight in them, the gloves need to come off. The good will that keeps us afloat will go and HMG will wonder what the hell is going on. staff at miy nic are already talking about what they will do, no turning in early, no phone calls at home, no psu, cbrn, the list goes on.Why should officers put themselves at greater risk.”

“I never thought I would welcome public disorder but, if things progress the way it seems, Mrs May will lose a lot of friends within government and, with it, her job.”
